Trust But Verify: A Petition for Election Transparency

We, the undersigned citizens of the State of Connecticut, call on the Secretary of the State to verify the accuracy of our voter rolls to ensure that noncitizens and individuals unlawfully present in the United States are not registered to vote in Connecticut. Through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, the Secretary of State's Chief Counsel responded that the office has not utilized, and does not intend to utilize, the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database to verify the citizenship of registered voters. North Carolina now verifies the citizenship of every registered voter using the federal SAVE database, with safeguards in place to ensure no eligible voter is ever wrongly removed. We ask Connecticut to do the same and to respond plainly and in writing.

The Connecticut Attorney General characterized our work as “vigilantism.” But we refused to back down. Vigilance is our duty — and if that makes us “vigilantes,” we proudly wear that title, and you can too.
